Facial Feminization Surgery
Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS) is a transformative procedure that modifies facial features developed under the influence of testosterone during puberty, resulting in a more traditionally feminine appearance. While rhinoplasty is a common component (my new, smoother nose looks adorable, by the way!), my specific surgery included additional procedures, such as genioplasty, where bone from my jaw was removed to soften its contour. The surgeon also reshaped my brow and orbital bones to further enhance femininity.

Since undergoing FFS, I've navigated an intense range of emotions. Overall, I'm incredibly grateful I went through with it, but the recovery process is undeniably challenging. Nothing could have fully prepared me for the realities of healing from such extensive surgery—no description or warning compares to actually experiencing it firsthand.
The first days post-operation were especially tough. I grappled with anxiety about my appearance alongside significant physical pain and discomfort. Moments of doubt crept in as I wondered, "What have I done?" I also felt frustrated thinking about activities I’d miss during my recovery, particularly riding my motorcycles and socializing with friends (partially self-imposed because of how uncomfortable I feel with all the swelling).
Thankfully, closely following my doctor's recovery instructions has been extremely helpful. Having a compassionate caretaker present also made a significant difference, offering emotional support as I processed these complex feelings.
Accessing FFS in the United States is challenging. Specialists are sparse, and often, patients must travel significant distances for quality care. Living near Charlotte, North Carolina, I had to travel to Baltimore, Maryland, to work with my surgeon, Dr. Del Corral. He's been incredible throughout this journey, and I'm confident in his artistry and skill.
Booking the surgery required me to pay nearly $4,000 upfront, and I'm still navigating the financial details to understand potential reimbursements. Fortunately, my health insurance covers a portion of the surgery and travel expenses, and I'm hopeful for some reimbursement soon.
